Phox is the artist of the weekend
Folk: It’s that time of year again; the one week countdown is upon us. So here’s our annual reminder of what we can all do to prepare and ensure it’s one for the ages.
BE PREPARED FOR ALL WEATHER: Believe us it’ll change drastically throughout the weekend. No matter what happens, remember it’s an adventure
BE KIND: to each other, to the artists, to the staff, and mostly to the large number of volunteers who make the festival happen.
BE PRESENT: We’re all coming to a speck of land in the sea to commune around music. Everything else is secondary.
NO EXPECTATIONS: We’re all nervous & excited, but the only certainty is that what we expect will happen, probably won’t. That’s why it’s fun.
SAFTEY IS SACROSANCT: We take this part VERY seriously. In case of weather/ emergency we may make hard decisions, but safety is paramount. ALWAYS.
LIVE MUSIC: Let’s face it, it’s what it’s all about. It’s our therapy, our inspiration, our coffee, our muse, our passion. And we are incredibly fortunate for the chance to share in it, together, for 3 full days.
We are counting the days, hours, minutes, seconds until we see you, our extended Folk Family, until then…

We’re happy to bring back another Folk tradition from our early years: Newport Folk on VINYL.
Newport Folk Presents™ has teamed with ATO Records to curate a limited edition vinyl series featuring ATO recording artists and Newport Folk alums. The repertoire will focus on unreleased material, b-sides, rarities and, of course, recordings culled from the festival. The releases will be sold at the festival, on ATO’s online store and by independent retailers. Head here to pre-order our first 7-inch, featuring “Daniella” by Hurray for the Riff Raff and “Violent Shiver” by Benjamin Booker!

“Sitting on the shores Lake Superior, Duluth, Minnesota would likely be far from the first place that comes to mind to look for a hard-picking bluegrass band. Yet that’s where Trampled By Turtles call home.”

6. With it’s barely-touched architecture and stunning harbor, Newport is the quintessential New England town. Come for the pristine colonial homes and Gilded-Age mansions, stay for one of the many anticipated events, like July’s Newport Folk Festival.
We approve of this message.
Rhode Island is often associated with the small stuff. Locals (proudly) call it the “biggest little state in the union”; I’ve even heard creative math that lil’ Rhody is 3% bigger at low tide. But what Rhode Island lacks in square miles, it makes up for in talent and artistry. This year, we’re proud to bring Death Vessel to the stages of Newport Folk. The layers of sound and the scales that Joel Thibodeau can cover is what first caught my attention. Knowing that he represents Rhode Island only makes his artistry more special.
There are 161 days until Death Vessel steps onto the stage at Newport. In that time, explore his music. His new album Island Intervals – produced by Jonsi of Sigur Rós will be released on February 25. That should give you ample time to get to know yet another reason why lil’ Rhody is so great.
